  Back Bay Science Center

Miocean is actively involved in the Newport Beach Back Bay Science Center, proposed for the Fall of 2006. This multiple building facility, to be located on Shellmaker Island in the Newport Upper Back Bay estuary, will enable the public to learn about ocean science and ocean pollution first hand. Miocean has pledged $500,000 of a total $6 million budget to complete the project and is seeking the assistance of the Orange County Community Foundation to reach its goal. Other fundraisers include: the University of California Irvine, the City of Newport Beach, the County of Orange, and the State of California.

 Summary

  North Creek

Miocean recently completed its first project, a $1.2 million filtration system at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, which is now trapping tons of pollutants prior to their entering our local beaches and coastal waters. Miocean worked vigorously with local, city and state government to ensure the project met the established requirements and timelines. In addition, Miocean directly donated $100,000 to the completion of the project.

SUCCESS AT SALT CREEK

The City of Dana Point Salt Creek Ozone Treatment Plant was completed in November 2005 and is currently running continuously. Weekly monitoring data also supports the effectiveness, as samples are tested from the influent and effluent, and the effluent shows a significant decrease in bacteria numbers to well below the standards.

The City has contracted with South Coast Water District to operate and maintain the plant.

It should be noted that the plant is designed to treat dry weather flows and automatically shut owns when flows increase due to a rain event, but since this season has been pretty dry, the City has been fortunate to be able to run the plant almost continuously.

The City is excited and pleased about the results so far. As this is a new technology to treat urban runoff, the City continues to evaluate performance and operational protocols so that the most effective and efficient operations and maintenance procedures can be implemented. Should you have any questions about the Salt Creek Ozone Treatment Plant, please contact Lisa Zawaski at 949-248-3584.

  Ocean Institute

Miocean recently engaged in a joint venture with the Ocean Institute in Dana Point, California. The “Ocean Institute’s Watershed Education Program Sponsored by Miocean”, is aimed at students in the 5th grade in the communities of Orange County, California and will allow them to learn about the impact of their local watersheds on coastal waters.
